For this project, our team installed a Desert Aire SA60 Dehumidification Unit equipped with a remote air-cooled condenser to provide reliable, high-performance humidity control for the facility’s natatorium. Indoor pools are among the hardest-working environments in commercial HVAC: warm water evaporates around the clock, loading the air with moisture and chloramines that attack building surfaces and equipment. The SA60 was selected and configured specifically for those conditions, with capacity matched to the pool’s evaporation load and construction built to withstand the corrosive pool room atmosphere. Beyond the equipment itself, the installation integrates the unit with the building’s existing hot water heating, so one system now manages the natatorium’s complete air-side environment.

The system is designed to optimize indoor air quality and energy efficiency through several key features:

Outdoor SA60 Dehumidification Unit: Engineered for durability and consistent moisture removal in demanding environments. Outdoor placement also frees space inside the facility and keeps service access simple, so routine maintenance never disrupts the pool schedule.

Remote Air-Cooled Condenser: Allows for flexible placement and improved heat rejection. Locating the condenser remotely lets the design put heat rejection where it performs best without compromising where the dehumidification unit sits.

Duct-Mounted Hot Water Coil Control: The dehumidification unit seamlessly manages the indoor hot water coil to maintain proper temperature and comfort. One integrated control sequence runs both humidity and heating, so the two systems work together instead of fighting each other, avoiding the wasted energy of heating and dehumidification working at cross purposes.

Automatic Room Pressurization Control: The system maintains the natatorium under negative pressure relative to surrounding building areas, preventing moisture migration and protecting nearby spaces. Humid, chlorine-laden air stays in the pool room where the system can treat it, and adjacent areas stay dry and odor-free. Pressurization is one of the most common failure points in natatorium design, and automating it removes the guesswork.

This installation ensures long-term humidity management, occupant comfort, and building protection, delivering a complete, efficient solution tailored to the unique needs of a natatorium environment. Consistent moisture control protects the structure and finishes season after season, and the heat recovered during dehumidification offsets space and water heating costs, so the system is as efficient to operate as it is effective.
